5 Staples of the Legal System That Statistics Say Don’t Work

– Objectivist Leonard Peikoff on abortion rights. A snippet: “That which lives within the body of another can claim no right against its host. Rights belong only to individuals, not to collectives or to parts of an individual.”

– On the same topic, a New Mexico state legislator has proposed a law that would make abortion following rape or incest a felony. House Bill 206 (link opens pdf) would treat abortion as “tampering with evidence” of a crime, and carry a penalty of three years in prison!

– A proposed Florida law would prohibit massage parlors from operating between the hours of 10pm and 6am. The bill’s supporters say that it’s about fighting human trafficking and “sexual exploitation”, blah, blah, blah…but isn’t this really just another manifestation of American society’s deep-rooted erotophobia?

– On a more positive note, Rhode Island’s House of Representatives has overwhelmingly passed a bill to legalize gay marriage in the state, and the bill now goes to the Senate. (Rhode Island is the only New England state where gay marriage is not yet legally recognized).
